  1. Choose the Right Type of Bank Account: Checking or Savings
Bank accounts come in all shapes and sizes; if you're opening your first bank account, then basic is probably better. At WaFd Bank, we offer *Free Checking(also known as a spending account), which comes with no minimum balance or monthly maintenance fees, 24/7 online and mobile banking, mobile check deposit, contactless debit card and Voice-Activated Banking. This is just about everything you need to do all your banking digitally, and you have the option of visiting any of over 200 branches across nine western states if you need to see someone in person.

If you're looking to get more, Rewards Checking** might be for you. Get a variety of perks like shopping discounts, mobile phone protection, credit monitoring, and much more.

Fund Your Account: Minimum Deposit to Open a Bank Account
You'll need money to put into your new account, and most banks require a minimum dollar amount. All WaFd Bank Checking accounts have a minimum deposit of just $25.
  2. Provide Your Information: What Do You Need to Open a Bank Account Online
You'll need the same information you would give to the bank in person. Requirements vary depending on where you go, but at WaFd Bank you'll need:

    • To live in one of WaFd Bank's nine states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, or Washington
    • Funding method, such as a credit or debit card, or routing and account number
    • Address, and a mailing address if it's different than your physical address
    • Contact information, including email address and phone number
    • Social Security Number or other tax identification number
    • Personal identification, either a driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport or military ID, U.S. government-issued ID or permanent resident card (green card), or a foreign passport
  3. Fund Your Account
Whether it's with a card or account information from a different bank, you'll need a way to get money into your new account. When you get to that step in the account opening process, choose the method you want to use and enter the information. Money will not transfer unless your new account is opened.
  4. Submit Your Account Application
Once all information is provided, hit submit and keep an eye out for an email to tell you more. If your account was opened, you'll receive more information about how to access your account online and any next steps. Sometimes, if the bank can't verify you are who you say you are, your online account application will be denied and you'll be asked to visit any branch to open your account in person instead.

Can You Open a Bank Account if You're Under 18?

To open a bank account with WaFd, you must be at least 18 years old, and a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Legal U.S. Resident. There are some banks that allow you to open an account by yourself when you're under 18, but most require you to be at least 18.

Do You Need a Job to Open a Bank Account?

Nope! You may be asked if you have a job and who your employer is for bank records (there are a lot of federal regulations banks have to follow) but having a job is not necessary to open an account.
